Setting up the top end on my Alfa's Twin-Cam engine.
Porco Revival Episode 3
In this video I setup the valve clearances, Top Dead Centre markings, and camshaft timing as best I can, given the circumstances, which aren't great! But at least the engine has moved that much closer to going back into the car, and the car back into service as my daily driver.

I'm negotiating on a very rusty 1971 1750 GTV. It's been sitting outside for many years, will need all that chassis work, interior needs total replacement, all much like this car. It is straight and complete though. The owner is a packrat, has about 100 cars on his property, mostly BMWs, a couple of 912s, just the one Alfa. It's a dance, trying to establish a rapport, listening to his BS, his intention to get to it and all. I'm not offering much, the car has value as a starting point, it will take a lot of money and a lot of labor, fortunately I've done this sort of thing before, on Alfas and three XK-Es, rotisserie body restorations. The seller is in his late 60s and in ill health, I'm 78 and doing OK but not as spry as I used to be, time will tell.
@@3ducs good luck! That’s an amazing find!
@@JethroBronner IF I can pry it away from him and save the car!
Not sure if you are still around, hope you are and are well. Just wondered as I watched you grind the shim, the buckets must vary slightly so could you not use a micrometre to see if any of the buckets were sufficiently different to allow you to use an off the shelf shim for that particular valve? Or should you not move the buckets from their original placement in the head?
@@johnwh1039 yeah sometimes that will get you over the line, but the shim size I needed was so far off anything I had (well beyond factory sizes) that even huge variation in the buckets wouldn’t help.
@@JethroBronner Thank you. Hope to see more content in future. I had a couple of 105 Series GT Juniors many years ago, and my interest never waned. Love this sort of technical content.
what metal did you use for electroplating ? what thickness ?
any paint that would work, brushed or sprayed, for the metal parts ?
These videos are priceless documents, you can read about this all day long on the forums (which are great) but to actually see the work being performed in such a high quality format like this is something else.. thanks for the work and effort put in.
Hi Jethro, what blast media do you use?
@@duncankerr8258 I use a 50 micron glass bead for refinishing and cleaning.
Thank you
you gotta do more vids :)
Love these videos! You are making it easier to restore mine! Thanks
Gorgeous
Hi, what ignition coil would you recommend for my 1750, it has 123 distributor! Cheers from Australia
@@ferneycaro-co3hz any 12 volt non-ballasted coil with a primer resistance over 1ohm will work. I use the Bosch Blue Coil or the Bosch Super Blue Coil.
Hi JB trusting you are well, and all is okay with you. Best regards from South Oz
Heay Just do what I did to my alfa, took a axe and smashed it up then took it to the scrap.
I believe you mean Ohms Resistance measurement. Measuring resistance in the contact point of the winding. If electrical 'Current' is running through the sender then the tank will explode from the current and vapor. Yes some sending units have current wiring but that should be for the fuel pump and not the Sending unit (which should be using ohms for measurement)🙂
Hi Jethro, hope all is good? Any new videos on the horizon?
Hello! It's time for another yearly tradition of rewatching your videos. They are very inspirational and informational. Without a doubt, you are one of the reasons of my project car being back on the road! I hope you are doing great, and that your Alfas are still fun to drive and work on!
Hello I am just coming to the end of my nut and bolt restoration on my 1967 Alfa Romeo Zagato which has the same engine as this one. This video has been a great help with my rebuild of my engine, so thankyou for taking the time to do this video.
how to avoid slopy steering
I’m definitely a huge nerd. 🙋🏼♂️
Just got one for my Car - thanks for your insight.
How goes the progress we've been patiently waiting for oh so long.
We miss you very much... We hope you are well.
I have been looking at a couple different Alfa Spiders lately, which got me thinking about your channel. I just went back through and watched all your Spider videos. Still great. To be clear, your other videos are amazing as well. Hope life is treating you well and you are getting to do the things you enjoy. Thank you for the awesome content.
Hey Jethro! How are you doing?
Nope. Lost me when he started bead blasting the bodies
missing😢... obviously someone disabled in the past and lost this spring 😢. Could you give me some information of this particular spring? Greetings from Austria. Fabio
It turns out that spring under the diaphragm is not required. The spring under the rubber plug that seals the chamber from outside air is obviously required, but this booster had an additional spring under the diaphragm to close the diaphragm faster, but it’s not standard or required, it’s just there for tuning.
wow, thanks a lot for this quick answer.
Hello Jethro, really nice job on your Duetto. Your videos are so helpful for my restoration. As i watched this video I mentioned that on mine air valve the small spring is missing😢... obviously someone disabled in the past and lost this spring 😢. Could you give me some information of this particular spring? Greetings from Austria. Fabio
I thought maybe youtube wasn't recommending the channel. Can't believe its been a year without a video.
Sir, isn't it time for some more?...
Yes
@@JethroBronner Sehr gut. Danke!
I haven't even watched the video yet and I already love it! "What do you do when you have more projects that you can handle, buy two more motorcycles of course" I couldn't agree more
How is your porco now? How has it been doing since the rebuild?
Where is it now after two years..
Beautiful to watch. Like a surgeon.... Can't wait till you fire it up. Looking forward to it. Thanks
I had similar problems on my '69 GTV. If you've got an old Alfa and the steering isn't intuitive, either the box itself has problems or the box is loose on its mounting.
Catching up on the videos. Turned on to your channel from Home Built by Jeff: octagon rotisserie. I noticed the high tensile strength washers. Are they crush washers? if so, they would need to be installed correctly. The smaller circumference side goes to the part, the wider to the nut or bolt. The crush washer is designed as a lock washer in disguise. It takes torque to compress them; that compression helps keep the nut/bolt from loosening up. Totally enjoying the videos and the meticulous attention to detail, it shows a love for the car and craft that goes into it.

Oddly satisfying video. Great work.

Am a mechanic from Kenya I and my team rebuild an alfa engine but we are stuck on how to tune the distributor (hard start) Any thing I should note
no dust-seals on the throttle-shaft bearings?
not worried about glass beads getting in the passages?
This a great video, so simple but incredibly satisfying to watch. This is not helping me resist an impulse purchase of an Alfa LOL.
We are waiting for you Jethro. Hope all is well. Always enjoy your videos.
Revenez, les vidéo nous manque !
It sounds like 123 Ignition distributors do not have adequate over-voltage protection. I use Lumenition ignition systems, both standard and high-performance version, and they have never failed on me over the 30+ years I have owned them.
Thanks for removing the cloak of mystery surrounding these enigmatic (well formerly enigmatic) carbs. The Shakespearian tone is a real bonus especially since mine is going in a japanese car.
No explanation from an arrogant South African
Hello, is it the same gearbox that we can fin in a Spider from 1974 for example ?
Yes essentially the same apart from a few small details like different bearings. But the gears and synchros are the same.
Arek you ok? We are missing you.
what kind of press did you use? I mean how much tons? Thank you
It’s a 20 ton press. Although you probably don’t need the full 20 tons
